EDUCATIONAL OUTREACH

Lyric Opera San Diego realizes we have a duty to the young audiences of our city, to provide them the opportunity to experience live musical performances, both in the theater and in their classrooms. Musical theater, in English, is a very good way to introduce young audiences to a wide variety of musical styles, as well as the thrill of live performers in an intimate setting.

The centerpiece of this effort is our First View program which allows students and selected social service organizations to see our productions fully staged in performances before the general public see them. These performances are as instructive to the performers as they are to the student audiences. They are an affordable way to provide a life-long habit of attending and supporting live musical theater performances, by letting the art form provide the excitement. There is a minimal fee. Reservations must be made through the Lyric Opera office. Click Link for First View/Preview educational & teacher's materials.

Opera-go-Round is a tour to area elementary schools that introduces the students to the joys of live musical performing, and specifically to the world of the solo and the duet. There is also a Music Director who is able to encourage the students in their instrumental musical studies. This program includes a worksheet with literacy and discussion options that can impact on the children in educational ways far from the performance itself. When the schools have been visited by this program they are then eligible to attend the First View presentations at the theater.

Pre-show Focus Lectures
is an ongoing series that are offered to patrons as a pre-show adult education option. The Director of the production presents a discussion to the audience about background and issues in the work to be performed. This discussion gives historical background and social information on the piece as well as insights into the specifics of each Lyric Opera presentation. Cost is $5.00/person holding a ticket for the evenings performance. Reservations required.

Lyric Opera Academy for Performing Arts
The Lyric Opera San Diego Summer Academy 2006 was a great success! We are very proud of the growth of each of our students and are thrilled to see many of them already auditioning and being cast in local theatre productions in San Diego. We have recently made the decision to postpone incorporating a fall session into our academy plan, and instead have decided to look ahead towards our Summer Academy 2007. We will have information about this program posted by the end of October, so be sure to check back with us to find out more details.

Speaker Service/Social Service Entertainment
The company provides a docent speaker service to area organizations. This is a free, fifteen to forty-five minute talk on aspects of the season and aspects of the North Park Theater Project. For a fee there can be a musical presentation of two singers and an accompanist to provide a half-hour musical presentation of solos and duets from the repertoire of Lyric Opera. The minimum fee is $300.00.

Partnerships with area schools

We are proud partners with three area schools. School of Creative and Performing Arts, Dana Middle School, School of Media and Performing Arts. These schools attend our productions and they have an inside track on child roles in our productions.

LyriKids
This is a new program that we are going to be instigating in the next year and a half. It will be a mentoring program for middle school age children where they will be able to shadow a person on the crew and learn those backstage jobs from them with a writing assignment, for credit, after the show. This will include before, during and after mentoring from members of our Lyric Opera Staff.
