MATCHING CAMPAIGNS
Matching other people’s money to yours is always a wonderful way to support a cause.
Do you know that many employers match donations their employees make to non-profit organizations?
We invite you to check with your employer to see if you can increase your donation by opting into a program.
Some local employers who are helping to support Lyric Opera through their employees include Caterpillar Foundation, Exxon Mobil Foundation, IBM, Qualcomm Matching Gift Program, Sun Microsystems,
Union Bank of California, UnitedHealth Group, and Vanguard Charitable Endowment Program.
SPECIAL CAMPAIGNS
Unfortunately, membership donations and ticket sales do not cover all our financial needs. Lyric Opera
frequently has special campaigns for specific purposes.
Most of you are well acquainted with our holiday Beg-A-Thon. We are also known to have occasional raffles,
Galas, and special Matching Campaigns. Every contribution you make – in any amount – is greatly appreciated
by us and helps us keep the Lyric Opera San Diego and the Birch North Park Theatre a vibrant part of
San Diego’s cultural and business community.

ESTATE PLANNING OPPORTUNITIES
BEQUESTS – name LOSD in a will or trust, designating a specific amount, a specific asset, a percentage
of the net or a share of the residual (what is left over) from the estate
LIFE INSURANCE – list LOSD as a beneficiary to contribute the rights and proceeds of an insurance policy
RETIREMENT ACCOUNTS – name LOSD as the beneficiary of the remainder beneficiary of retirement
assets after the donor’s passing. A good way to reduce a taxable estate as well as the potential tax
consequences for non-charitable beneficiaries
CHARITABLE REMAINDER TRUST – a split interest trust often funded with highly appreciated assets
(to avoid capital gains) or to reduce the size of a potentially taxable estate. Donors (or their designated beneficiary) retain a term of years or life-interest in a designated income stream and corpus passes to LOSD when the
trust terminates.
CHARITABLE LEAD TRUST – the opposite of a charitable remainder trust – charity receives income from the trust for a term of years and then the trust terminates and asset returns to the donor/family.
LIFE ESTATE – donor gifts residential property to LOSD, but retains a “life estate” or right to live in the property for his/her lifetime. Donor is responsible for all property maintenance and real estate taxes, but receives the benefit of an immediate tax deduction which is what makes it preferable for some donors over leaving the property in a will or trust.
Estate planning should be done with the advice of your attorney or financial advisor.
We will be pleased to meet with you and your advisor if you so desire.
